The new European Unions F Gas Regulation No 517/2014 became law on 1 January 2015. This imposed legal obligations on operators of equipment that contain F Gases (refrigerants such as HFC & HCFC) this new legal requirement places the need for personnel working in the air conditioning & refrigeration industry to prove competence and satisfy a knowledge and understanding level that will enable them to achieve certification and comply with the new F Gas regulations. The regulations apply to all stationary equipment containing F Gases. Polar Pumps Ltd is already approved to provide training and assessments to enable candidates to achieve any one of the 4 categories of certification. Below is a list of the 4 categories stating the areas of work eligible.

BESA – C+G Cat 1&2 – 5 Day- £795 – Aim at personnel without previous refrigeration experience. 

Our 5 day basic F Gas course offers training to personnel whom have  had no previous experience working with F Gases and need either City & Guilds or Citb certification – which will allow them to work on fridge systems safely and understand  current Regulations

BESA City & Guilds renewal – 1 Day £315 
If you require your J11 F gas renewal you can enrol for our new re-assesment option sat in one day which is a whole lot easier than your first initial assessment 5 years ago. Includes refresher training. Short assessment. Short exam.

Category 4 – 1 Day £315
For personnel who require certification of competence to carry our indirect leak testing of systems containing F Gases (Fluorocarbon Refrigerants)

Category 3 – 1 Day £315 – De-commissioning work
For personnel who require certification of competence to carry out refrigerant recovery on systems containing F Gases (Fluorocarbon Refrigerants) up to 3 Kg of f Gas (6 Kg if hermetically sealed system)

Category 2 – 2 Day £415 – Aimed at skilled refrigeration engineers

For personnel who require certification of competence to carry out recovery, installation, maintenance and repairs on systems containing F Gases (Fluorocarbon Refrigerants) up to 3 Kg of f Gas (6 Kg if hermetically sealed system) or Air conditioning / heat pumps up to 5 Kg of F Gases (6 Kg if hermetically sealed system). Commercial pipe work and brazing certificate is also required for this category which is also available at Polar.

Category 1 -2 Day – £415 – Aimed at skilled refrigeration engineers
For personnel who require certification of competence to carry out all work on all systems such as installation, recovery, maintenance and repairs regardless of F Gas quantity. Industrial pipe work and brazing certificate is also required for this category which is also available at Polar.

To enable you to select the correct assessments & training if required, below is a list situations that you may fit into and a solution to your certification requirements.

1. I am currently installing or working on small Air conditioning or refrigeration systems with less than 3 Kg refrigerant charge and have no qualifications in this area.

Solution:- The requirement for this situation is Category 2 because you have no previous qualification you would need to enrol and complete our 5 Day basic refrigeration & Air conditioning technology Course which includes the necessary training and assessment for F Gas category 2. To enable you to fulfil the requirements to gain the full Category 2 Qualification you would also need to enrol and complete the 2 Day Commercial Pipe Work & Brazing Course which is also available from Polar.

2. I am currently installing or working on small Air conditioning or refrigeration systems with less than 3 Kg refrigerant charge and have a safe handling of refrigerants qualification.

Solution: – The requirement for this situation is Category 2 because you have a current Safe Handling of refrigerants Certificate you would need to enrol and complete our 2 Day F Gas Category 2 Course which includes the necessary training and assessment for F Gas category 2. To enable you to fulfil the requirements to gain the full Category 2 Qualification you would also need to enrol and complete the 2 Day Commercial Pipe Work & Brazing Course which is also available from Polar.

3. I am currently installing or working on Air conditioning or refrigeration systems with more than 3 Kg refrigerant charge and have no qualifications in this area.

Solution: – The requirement for this situation is Category 1 because you have no previous qualification you would need to enrol and complete our 5 Day basic refrigeration & Air conditioning technology Course which includes the necessary training and assessment for F Gas category 1. To enable you to fulfil the requirements to gain the full Category 1 Qualification you would also need to enrol and complete the 2 Day Industrial Pipe Work & Brazing Course which is also available from Polar.

4. I am currently installing or working on Air conditioning or refrigeration systems with more than 3 Kg refrigerant charge and have a safe handling of refrigerants qualification.

Solution: – The requirement for this situation is Category 1 because you have a current Safe Handling of refrigerants Certificate you would need to enrol and complete our 2 Day F Gas Category 1 Course which includes the necessary training and assessment for F Gas category 1. To enable you to fulfil the requirements to gain the full Category 1 Qualification you would also need to enrol and complete the 2 Day Industrial Pipe Work & Brazing Course which is also available from Polar.

5. I only carry out de-commissioning work on small Air conditioning or refrigeration systems with less than 3 Kg refrigerant charge.

Solution: – The requirement for this situation is Category 3 you would need to enrol and complete our 1 Day F Gas Category 3 Course which includes the necessary training and assessment to fulfil the requirements of F Gas category 3.

6. I am a system owner / operator and only use or have under my control, Air conditioning or refrigeration systems and I do not work on them directly.

Solution: – The requirement for this situation is Category 4 you would need to enrol and complete our 1 Day F Gas Category 4 Course which includes the necessary training and assessment to fulfil the requirements of F Gas category 4.

7. I am looking to cross train and start installing or working on small Air conditioning or refrigeration systems with less than 3 Kg refrigerant charge and have no qualifications in this area..

Solution: – The requirement for this situation is Category 2 because you have no previous qualifications in this area you would need to enrol and complete our 5 Day basic refrigeration & Air conditioning technology Course which includes the necessary training and assessment for F Gas category 2. To enable you to fulfil the requirements to gain the full Category 2 Qualification you would also need to enrol and complete the 2 Day Commercial Pipe Work & Brazing Course which is also available from Polar.

8. I am looking to cross train and start installing or working on Air conditioning or refrigeration systems with more than 3 Kg refrigerant charge and have a safe handling of refrigerants qualification.

9. I am currently carrying out periodic maintenance of Air conditioning or refrigeration systems.

Solution: – The requirement for this situation is Category 4 you would need to enrol and complete our 1 Day F Gas Category 4 Course which includes the necessary training and assessment to fulfil the requirements of F Gas category 4.
